ALLISON SVOBODA

“Mandala” is a large sculptural endeavor of a colossal scale equal to that of Alexander’s “The Tempest.” Svoboda uses dozens of sheets of Japanese rice paper transformed by ink washes to create a large abstract collage that allows us to loose ourselves to the power of pattern, symmetry and scale. Yet again, the notions of fragility we would normally associate with the material dissolve and we are left to admire something of collective power. In a new fashion, she succeeds in achieving the illusion and allure of the mandala form." —Grand Rapids Press
